What to Do If a QR Code Asked for a Recovery Phrase
A wallet recovery phrase, seed phrase, private key, or backup words can give someone control of a crypto wallet. Do not type it into a page opened by an unexpected QR code.
If you did not enter the phrase
- Close the QR page and do not continue through chat, support, or wallet prompts.
- Open your wallet only from the app or hardware wallet workflow you already trust.
- Check whether you approved a transaction, connected a wallet, or shared any password.
- Report the QR code to the site, event, exchange, or community where it appeared.

If you entered the recovery phrase
- Assume the phrase may be exposed and stop using that wallet for new funds.
- From a trusted device and wallet source, create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase.
- Move any remaining funds to the new wallet if you can do so safely.
- Save the suspicious QR page, URL, messages, and transaction IDs for reporting.
QRsafer cannot reverse blockchain transfers. If money moved, use the reporting tools in the relevant exchange, wallet, or platform and keep transaction records.
Recovery phrase red flags
- The page says the phrase is needed to verify, unlock, sync, or repair a wallet.
- A support person asks you to scan a QR code and type backup words into a form.
- The page claims you must enter a phrase before receiving an airdrop, refund, or prize.
- The domain does not match the wallet, exchange, or official project site you intended to use.

Frequently asked questions
Should I enter a recovery phrase after scanning a QR code?
No. A wallet recovery phrase or seed phrase should not be entered into a page opened by an unexpected QR code. Treat the request as high risk.
What if I saw the request but did not type the phrase?
Close the page. If you did not enter the phrase, private key, password, or approval, the QR scan alone usually does not expose the wallet.
What if I entered my recovery phrase?
Assume the phrase may be compromised. Use a trusted wallet environment to move remaining funds to a new wallet with a new recovery phrase, and stop using the exposed wallet.
Can QRsafer recover crypto after a seed phrase is shared?
No. QRsafer helps preview QR destinations before wallet, payment, and login pages open. It cannot reverse blockchain transactions or recover exposed wallet phrases.
